Candela Consultants LLC was conceived in 2010 when Dr. Phil Candela and son Nick joined forces to specialize in their respective fields of expertise with the common denominator as a passion and respect for the study of economics. Dr. Phil Candela spearheads all geology and mineralogy projects, while Nick Candela manages all economic/business reports and prospect generation.
Dr. Phil Candela has 30 years of experience in scientific research and education with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary areas bridging geology, physical chemistry,mineralogy, forensic science/security, resource and energy sciences, thermodynamics, and economic geology. He is an industry-oriented consultant with expertise in a wide range of areas, including mineral exploration, mineralogy of asbestos and related materials, the petrology of talc-, amphibole-, and serpentine-bearing rocks, industrial processes, industrial mineralogy, environmental chemistry, polarized light microscopy, and more. Dr. Candela is an award-winning teacher with extensive experience delivering lectures and conducting workshops on a wide range of topics in many diverse academic, corporate, governmental, and non-academic venues. He is the Founder and Co-Director of the Laboratory for Mineral Deposits Research (LMDR) in the Department of Geology at the University of Maryland, and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and the Society of Economic Geologists.
Nick Candela earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from The University of Maryland, College Park and has an extensive background of work experience in the field of economics. He started his career with the American Chemistry Council as an economic analyst and writer, transforming complex data and environmental legislation into simpler reports read by a general audience. In addition to publishing weekly economic reports, he helped research, write and edit “The 2009 Guide to the Business of Chemistry,” an annual best-selling industry guidebook. He also has experience with contracted foreign direct investment projects through his work for the Chilean and Yorkshire, UK economic development agencies – InvestChile and Yorkshire Forward, respectively – for which he conducted campaigns designed to attract overseas investors and businesses. During his tenure with The American Road and Transportation Builder’s Association, he worked as a Research Analyst within the trade association’s economics team. In addition to arming lobbying efforts with compelling economic data, he authored numerous state profile economic reports that detailed the health of state economies and future projections for state transportation infrastructure spending. Candela co-authored a report titled “The Economic Impacts of Prohibiting Coal Fly Ash Use in Transportation Infrastructure Construction,” for which he conducted extensive interviews with Department of Transportation representatives of all 50 states.
